Driving to Helen From Atlanta in December: What to Know

The short answer

Helen is under two hours from Atlanta, but on Christmas Market weekends and parade night plan for slower roads, paid parking downtown and cold mountain evenings. Leave early, check the City of Helen parking map, and bring layers.

Most Christmas visitors to Helen come up from metro Atlanta for the day or a single night. Helen’s own visitor guide puts the village under two hours from Atlanta (source). The drive itself is the easy part; a little planning around timing, parking and weather makes the rest of the day smoother.

When to leave

The days most people choose are also the days the roads into Helen get busy:

  • Friday, November 27: the Lighting of the Village, on Thanksgiving weekend.
  • Saturdays November 28 and December 5: Christmas Market days, 10 AM to 5 PM.
  • Saturday, December 12: the parade at 6 PM.

For a market day, leave early enough to arrive around opening time. For the parade, aim to be parked well before 6 PM.

Parking when you arrive

Downtown parking is mostly paid. The City of Helen publishes a parking map of its public lots on its website (city parking page), and privately run lots post their own prices. Download the map before you leave so you know where you are heading. Once parked, everything downtown is walkable.

Weather and what to pack

  • Layers. December evenings in the North Georgia mountains often fall into the 30s and 40s even after a mild afternoon.
  • A flashlight or phone light for the walk back to the car after an evening event.
  • Payment for parking.
  • A bag for anything you buy at the market.

Making it an overnight

If you are coming for the Lighting of the Village, the parade or New Year’s Eve at the Festhalle (Chamber listing), staying the night saves a late drive on mountain roads. Our where to stay guide covers downtown hotels, cabins and bed and breakfasts.
