A walk through the village

Main Street, the bridge, the square

Downtown Helen is small enough to cover on foot in an afternoon. These are five places worth slowing down for. Every picture in this section is a real, unretouched photograph of Helen.

  1. Downtown Helen on a grey December day: the green arched bridge over the Chattahoochee hung with garland and red bows, nutcracker figures at each end, The Castle Inn beside it and shoppers on Main Street.

    Stop one

    The bridge over the Chattahoochee

Main Street crosses the river on a green arched bridge right in the middle of town. In December it is hung with garland and red bows, with a nutcracker standing guard at each end. The Castle Inn sits on the far bank.

  2. Main Street in Helen in winter sun: Bavarian-style shopfronts, and a street lamp wrapped in garland with a red "Season's Greetings" banner.
    Photo: Thomsonmg2000, CC0 (cropped)

    Stop two

    Main Street's painted shopfronts

Helen rebuilt its downtown in Bavarian style beginning in 1969, so the walk north is a run of painted gables, carved balconies and timber trim. The Christmas Market takes over this stretch on its two weekends.

    Stop three

    Helen Square

A half-timbered tower with a carved balcony stands over the arched entrance to Helen Square. Walk through the arch for the shops gathered behind it.

  4. Two musicians playing on a brick plaza in downtown Helen beside a timber pavilion with a steep red roof, red poinsettias in front.

    Stop four

    The plazas between the shops

Small brick courtyards open off Main Street between the buildings, some with timber pavilions. On the day this photo was taken, two musicians were playing beside one. They are the easiest place to step out of the crowd.

  5. A red-roofed shop in Helen with gingerbread-man cutouts along its front wall and an old-style street lamp outside.

    Stop five

    Gingerbread trim and toy shops

Away from the busiest corner, side streets carry smaller shops, some trimmed with gingerbread cut-outs like this one. A good place for a quieter half hour before dark.
